Beginner's guide to CBD
Everything you need for a first month that actually tells you something — in six steps, with no jargon.

Step 01
Name the outcome you want
Sleeping through the night, easing a sore knee, or taking the edge off before a meeting are all different goals with different products, doses, and timing. Write yours down before you buy anything.
Step 02
Pick a format that matches the timing
Tinctures act in 15–45 minutes and last 4–6 hours. Capsules and gummies take 45–90 minutes but last longer — better for overnight. Topicals work where you apply them and don't circulate meaningfully.
Step 03
Start low
Most adults start at 10–15 mg once daily. Hold that dose for three to four days before changing anything, so you can tell what the dose is actually doing.
Step 04
Go slow
Increase by 5–10 mg every three to four days until you notice the effect you wanted, or until side effects appear. Drowsiness, dry mouth, and loose stools are the usual first signs you've gone past your dose.
Step 05
Track it
Same time, same dose, written down. Our printable worksheet takes about 20 seconds a day and is the difference between knowing and guessing.
Step 06
Reassess at two weeks
Two weeks is a fair trial for most goals. If nothing has shifted at a reasonable dose, change one variable — format, timing, or product — rather than everything at once.
Before you buy: three things to check
- A current certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent lab, matched to the batch number on the label.
- Milligrams of cannabinoid per serving — not just per bottle.
- A THC figure you're comfortable with, especially if you're subject to drug testing.
When to talk to your provider first
If you take prescription medication — especially blood thinners, anti-seizure medication, or anything carrying a grapefruit warning — review CBD with your pharmacist or provider before starting. The same applies during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and for anyone under 18.
